The Midlands and Lakelands of Ireland are known for outdoor activities with exciting equestrian facilities, outstanding angling and some of the best parkland and links golf courses in Ireland.

Kildare is home to some of the world’s finest thoroughbreds and boasts a number of race courses. Other popular attractions include the Irish National Stud, Japanese Gardens & St Fiachra’s Garden.

For those who enjoy peace, tranquillity and country walks, county Laois has much to offer the visitor. Situated in the heart of the midlands, places of interest include Emo Court House & Gardens, The Rock of Dunamase and Abbeyleix Heritage House. For cruising and fishing enthusiasts, county Offaly is the place to visit. From Banagher enjoy a cruise and explore the many towns and villages on the Shannon Erne Waterway. In Tullamore the famous Tullamore Dew Heritage Centre can be visited and from there, one of the most important monastic sites in Ireland, Clonmacnoise.

Counties Westmeath and Longford, known for their lakes, waterways and unspoiled natural beauty ensure that top class angling can be enjoyed as well as many water sports. The region is also home to a number of popular tourist attractions including Fore Abbey, Belvedere House, Gardens & Park and Ballinlough Castle Gardens in Westmeath and Ballinamuck Visitors Centre and Corlea Trackway Visitor Centre in Longford.

County Cavan is known as the Lake County and Ireland’s longest river; the Shannon rises here and forms part of the Shannon Erne Waterway. Cruising, fishing and water sports are popular in Cavan and the county also has many lively towns and villages and a vibrant theatre and arts scene. Monaghan celebrates the renowned poet Patrick Kavanagh in the Patrick Kavanagh Rural and Literary Resource Centre in Inniskeen. This is a permanent exhibition dedicated to the life and work of the poet. For walking enthusiasts, there are a number of looped walks throughout the Sliabh Beagh region.
