Europe’s Best Beaches

It’s all about the beach on our summer holidays. The quality, breadth, sand quality and serenity of a beach can make or break a summer holiday.  Seduced by far-flung heat and the exotic tropics, it is easy to forget that some of the best beaches in the world are a couple of hours from home. Europe is blessed with some of the world’s most sensational coastlines. Great long stretches of golden sand, secret coves, the calm blue-green waters of the Mediterranean; and the strong Atlantic waves to play in.

Sunway has done the work for us and highlighted the best beach destinations for you and your family this summer.

Praia de Alvor, Alvor – €369 –  3*+ Prainha Village S/C – 18th May – 7 Nights

Much loved by locals and visitors alike, Alvor’s blue-flag beach is a big, open beach stretching for several kilometres. It’s particularly popular for kite-surfing, but you can also rent pedalos or kayaks and the waters are beautifully calm. Its white sands are picture perfect and contrast with the clear, blue waters. The long boardwalk takes you through the beautiful Ria de Alvor Nature Reserve where you can see exotic birds in their natural habitat.

Praia do Camilo, Portimao – €399 – 3*+ Estrela Do Vau S/C – 11th May – 7 Nights

This blue-flag beach and the neighbouring Praia Dona Ana (where there are cave tours by boat) grace many a postcard of the Algarve. Admire the magnificent rocks, some rising 70ft from the Atlantic. These rock formations protect the beach from the wind of the azure blue ocean for sunbathing and swimming.

Makronissos Beach, Ayia Napa, Cyprus €539 –  3* Green Bungalows S/C – 29th April  – 7 Nights

Secluded white sands lead to the azure ocean in this Blue Flag beach. Makronissos beach is actually two beaches, the Western beach and the main Makronissos beach itself. The main beach tends to get a little more crowded, especially in the summer, while the West beach is quieter, and thanks to its more open position tends to have better waves. If you’re planning on a little surfing or bodyboarding, this is the beach to choose. The eastern main beach is protected from the prevailing winds, so the sea is calmer and great for the kids.

Being a former reef, the peninsula is home to a variety of interesting rock formations. There are some ancient tombs which make it an interesting beach also.

Torrevigía Beach, Benalmádena €399 – 3* San Fermin Hotel B&B – 04th May – 7 nights

Torrevigía Beach is in Benalmádena and is a blue flag beach. It’s also a hidden secret and one of the quietest in the area. It has formed in a small nook on the Malaga coastline. It is near to Selwo Marina Delfinarium and Tivoli World and so ideal for families.

Bitez, The Bodrum Peninsula, Turkey €499 – 3* Summer Garden S/C – 01st June – 7 Nights

Bitez is a small charming resort surrounded by citrus groves. It is a laid-back resort with a relaxed atmosphere, with turquoise waters, tiny coves, beaches, tranquillity and stunning scenery in abundance. The sand and shingle beach with its shallow waters makes it perfect for families and ideal for windsurfing and other water sports.
