Haldidiki, Greece

Turn your back on the crowded South of Greece and opt for the unspoiled pleasures of the North. Sunway has just started a new route to Halkidiki. The north east of Greece is not particularly well known to Irish holidaymakers – which makes it ripe territory for those seeking to discover somewhere a little different. The three green fingers of Halkidiki reach out into the blue Aegean to create a very different, beautiful destination. ,Kassandra is the most popular area of Halkidiki with overseas visitors. Its combination of blue flag beaches, traditional villages, ample activities and modestly sized resorts is hard to resist. On a clear day you can see the myth-laden, 9,600ft Mount Olympus across the vast Gulf of Salonica. Halkidiki’s second peninsula, Sithonia, with its backbone of mountains and pine forests, has long been a magnet for Greek holidaymakers so has a very authentic feel. Along the coast, sweeping beaches are interspersed by secret coves, and the east side has commanding vistas of Mount Athos, the third peninsula.

Letojanni, Sicily

Letojanni is a popular coastal resort in Sicily and is relatively unknown in comparison to its busier neighbour, Taormina. The town outlines the gulf and enjoys a year-round mild climate and abundant sunshine and white beaches lapping the Ionian sea.  The beaches are a mix of fine sand and small pebbles and stretch down along the coast all the way to Taormina. The name “Letojanni” is said to derive from the Sicilian pronunciation of “lieti anni” meaning happy years and it’s a totally apt name to describe this family friendly resort. It’s a wonderful alternative to the busier resorts of Sicily and perfect for a quieter break. Letojanni enjoys a lovely atmosphere with sun-filled piazzas, shop-lined streets, and plenty of cafes and restaurants to taste the region’s specialties. Throughout the summer you’ll find lots of activities with music, shows and festivals. There are water sports for the active travellers and other outdoor treats like horseback riding in the citrus-scented hills.

Gozo, Malta

This lesser-known destination in Malta is much quieter than the main island and has been described as ‘the way Malta used to be’. The small island, is surrounded by clear azure waters and offers a number of stunning beaches. The countryside is also worth exploring, for its picturesque valleys and striking scenery.  Check out the capital city of Victoria too with its medieval Citadel, with fortified walls.

Marsalforn is the largest and most developed seaside resort in Gozo with plenty of restaurants, hotels and cafes. The traditional Maltese Luzzu fishing boats give Marsalforn Bay a charming and cosy feel and they also provide the restaurants in the bay with fresh seafood. The sandy beach in Marsalforn Bay is beautiful.  Children like the beach as it is protected from winds and it has shallow waters. Marsalforn Bay offers additional swimming opportunities in the surrounding rocky coastline on the left side of the bay up to Santa Marija point, with less people. The other side of Marsalforn Bay is an oasis for diving and snorkelling. Marsalforn beach offers water sports and boat trips around Gozo and Comino for the more adventurous visitors.
